Such fine words about "In a democratic society, citizens must be presented with the entire picture." & "participants must be allowed to compete on a level playing field."  It is a shame that the Missing News does not say them regarding how those who have tried to fight for the Cawthra Bush have been "muzzled" by the Mayor and denied access to City records.

Mississauga News - May 10-11, 2003 - Editorial

Muzzling a no-no

No matter how you slice it, Mayor Hazel McCallion's governance-related motion tabled at Regional council Thursday smacks of an attempt to gag Peel Region's chair.

By asking that council approval be required before Region Chair Emil Kolb or staff can distribute literature to residents with respect to Mississauga's attempt to sever ties with Peel Region, McCallion is, in effect, trying to make it increasingly and unjustly difficult for senior officials to defend their governmental turf.

When City of Mississauga officials drop their go-it-alone propaganda on the doorsteps of every resident, it's only fair that those charged with the responsibility of standing up for Peel Region are allowed to do just that in response.

In a democratic society, citizens must be presented with the entire picture.

If Kolb's hands are tied, who is left to defend the Region and the merits of two-tier government in Peel?

Certainly not parochial councillors from Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.

If regional government is going to go the way of the dinosaur, and that can only happen with the green light from Queen's Park, it must at least be a fair fight.  Citizens deserve nothing less.

As McCallion herself has said on numerous occasions, albeit with respect to other contentious issues, participants must be allowed to compete on a level playing field.
