Councillor Maja Prentice said, "I do take exception to the threat issued by Councillor Culham.  No one will threaten me to do one thing or other because someone has a long memory."

“Long memory”
remark ignites some short fuses

Ward 6 councillor David Culham upset some of his fellow councillors Wednesday when he said he has a long memory and would be watching closely how they voted on an issue in his ward.

Culham made the remark during discussion of whether the City would give 120 days' notice to Brian and Lois Stevens to leave the City-owned Bird property.  Council eventually approved that action, over Culham's objection, in an 8-2 vote.

Immediately after Culham made the remark, Ward 8 councillor Donna Lane referred to the comment. She said she would not take it "as a threat because I'm sure it was not intended as that."

Later Ward 3 councillor Maja Prentice said, "I do take exception to the threat issued by Councillor Culham.  No one will threaten me to do one thing or other because someone has a long memory."

Culham and Mayor Hazel exchanged words during the debate.  At one point Culham suggested his opponents on the issue were "living in a cocoon."  The mayor admonished Culham, saying, "Don't make comments about other people."  She also said she didn't appreciate the councillor's suggestion that there had been a "fuzzy opinion" given by a member of City staff.

That upset Culham who denied he had said that. "You can disagree with me," he told
McCallion, "but I don't like my words twisted."
