It is not often I agree with the Missing news but they right here - "
received a dose of reality yesterday when they ran up against the brick wall called the politics of power."  Be involved!

THE MISSISSAUGA NEWS   Mar 11, 2005

Stay tuned

The residents of Applewood Acres received a dose of reality yesterday when they ran up against the brick wall called the politics of power.

Residents, angry over a proposal to build a gas-fired power plant in their community, thought their sheer numbers and combined voices would be enough to derail the plan.

What they found instead is a process that is not only confusing, but one that is going to proceed whether they like it or not.  These types of power plants will be built because the provincial government wants it.  Nothing is going to stop them.

The good news for those in Applewood is that their community will likely be bypassed.  Not because of what the residents have to say, but because the proposals submitted for other neighbourhoods in Mississauga make more sense.

The Sithe proposal for Clarkson has already gone through several environmental hurdles under an earlier power plant proposal and the community there is resigned to its fate.  The same can be said for the second Sithe plant proposed for Brampton near the Mississauga boundary.

In December, an editorial in The Mississauga News warned residents what was on the horizon and urged them to take action.  A guest column written by a community activist in January also warned about the proposals.  In both cases the community response was non-existent.

If the residents of Applewood Acres escape without a power plant, they will be lucky because they fell asleep when the warning bells were sounding. This issue has received extensive coverage in the media and the residents should have kept themselves better informed.
