Cutting profits

By ZEN RURYK Toronto Sun

The City of Mississauga will make $40,000 from a small-scale logging project on one of its wood lots.

Parks director John Rydzewski says the city will revitalize a 65-acre patch of urban forest in the Cawthra Rd.- Q.E.W. area by cutting down sick, stunted and damaged trees.

If the city is pleased with the outcome, it could give the green light to similar cuts on Mississauga's other 40 wood lots.

But area resident Donald Barber 39, of Exbury Cres., complained the public hasn't been informed about the plan to cut down 2,000 of the 30,000 trees on the property over the next six weeks.

Barber said the city's plan will "open up" the area. He fears the wood lot will be damaged by people on dirt bikes and become a haven for people seeking a secluded spot for beer parties.

High quality wood which is obtained from the cut will be sold to furniture companies.
