Lakeview & Port Credit Get, Own Community Centre

By Joanne Healy

It's here! A community centre that residents of Cawthra, Lakeview and Port Credit can call their own. "No more driving to other community centres," says Brad Melville, Supervisor of Programs at Cawthra. "The new Cawthra Community Centre offers a wide variety of recreation programs and services to fill a void that, in the past, we couldn't fill with just a twin pad arena on site." The community centre is the final component that completes Cawthra's recreation facilities that include a twin pad arena, the Mississauga Seniors' Centre, Cawthra Pool, Cawthra Estate, and Port Credit Lawn Bowling, says

Theresa Kramer, Manager Cawthra, Brad Melville, Supervisor of Programs and John Blazenko, Supervisor of Operations during the final stages of construction. [1]

Theresa Kramer, Manager Cawthra. "These buildings plus the 30,000 square foot community centre, make Cawthra one of the largest recreation facilities in the city". Programs began October 16 offering everything from indoor soccer and various sports leagues to gardening, photography, dance and arts programs, as well as pre-school courses, inter-generational programs, noon-hour and after school programs, special interest courses and workshops.

"We're offering programs for the mind, body and spirit that appeal to everyone and to all ages," says Melville. "Youth in particular will have a place to get together. You can sit comfortably, have a coffee and relax here."

Unique to any City of Mississauga building is the regulation size basketball court with sprung-wood gymnasium floor, says Melville. It has the capability for two volleyball courts or three badminton courts. Also unique to the City is the two-lane walking track that "no other City of Mississauga community centre has. It offers a climate controlled, safe environment for walking which studies say is the number one recreational activity"

An exercise studio with sprung-wood flooring is available for activities such as fitness classes and yoga. For weddings, socials, and meetings there is a 3200 square foot room with a kitchen that can be used as is or divided into smaller rooms.

The Official Opening Ceremony is Sunday, January 23, 2000. But residents are encouraged to sign up now for programs and activities. Registration is by the new touch tone registration (TTR) system the city recently installed. This system requires a personal identification number (PIN). PIN applications are available at any community centre or call Customer Service Centre, 615-4545. For more information regarding Cawthra call Brad Melville 274-2583.
