Seniors' housing for Cawthra Park

By JOHN STEWART Staff

The gem of a development idea that began in 1979 has finally borne fruit with the approval of a five-storey seniors citizens' supportive housing development at Cawthra Park.

City council recently approved an application by Peel Living to build the 83-unit building on what is now part of the parking lot at Cawthra Arena.

Arbor Rd. will be extended on east side of Cawthra Rd., and the building will sit at the intersection.

It was in 1979 that the provincial government declared 11 acres of land at the north end of Cawthra Bush surplus to its needs.

City officials became very concerned that the land could be sold and developed for residential homes and a long series of negotiations began.

At one time, the heavily treed property near the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) was to be marketed by the former Liberal government under the Homes Now program and Peel Region was interested in developing a campus of community and residential uses.

Eventually a land exchange and purchase deal was worked out and the project was scaled down to a seniors' building, that would not be constructed in the woodlot.

Councillor Carmen Corbasson, who represents the area, sought assurances from staff that there will be as few trees removed as possible.

A staff report indicated that only a few trees will be removed and any vegetation that can be transplanted, will be transplanted.

Corbasson noted that the Lakeview Residents' Association supports the project and will be happy to see the height of the building reduced from the original six storeys to five.

A number of first floor activity rooms originally proposed for community use have been deleted.

The frontage, along Cawthra Rd. will remain at its original proposed height of four storeys.
