Cawthra facility to be finished by 2000

Community centre okayed by council

A new $5.2 million community centre to serve Ward 1 residents has been approved.

Councillor Carmen Corbasson convinced city councillors to "preapprove" construction of the new centre to be built beside Cawthra Arena.

Council agreed the arena project, along with $29.2 million in other projects, should be approved ahead of the remainder of the $86.5 million capital budget.

Uncertainties surrounding this year's budget, linked to changes in assessment and service responsibilities downloaded by Ontario, moved council to approve only certain projects in the capital budget, such as those funded completely by development levies and time sensitive projects such as road redevelopment which must be tendered now in order to be built in 1998.

Corbasson said the community centre in her ward has been in the planning process for four years and the City is already committed to it.

"We're not going to remove this from the budget based on downloading," she said.

Community Services Commissioner Paul Mitcham said deferring final approval of the community centre would delay the project a few months, but added the delay was prudent because of the $3 million in tax funding involved.

Corbasson said building the community centre on the publicly owned Cawthra site will save $2.1 million in land costs, while attaching the centre to the arena will save $100,000 in annual operating costs. She described the project as a "bare bones" centre, with a large gymnasium and four community meeting rooms.

Corbasson also asked council to consider adding a $175,000 elevated walking track in the gymnasium to the project. She said it's an ideal use beside the nearby Mississauga Seniors' Centre and in a ward that has the highest per capita number of seniors in Mississauga.

Corbasson suggested several other areas of the budget where items in her ward could be cut to offset most
