Renew woodlot

This letter was sent to Mayor Hazel McCallion. A copy was filed with The Mississauga News for publication;

Madam Mayor:

We have lived near the Cawthra Woods since 1952 and appreciate its natural beauty, particularly in the fall when the leaves are coloured, and in the spring when the trilliums blanket the forest floor. This is the exterior view.

What about inside the Woodlot? Is it to be closed to the public? A stroll along some of the few trails In the southern area reveals a woods "gone to seed," much of it swampy and mosquito infested. We believe this woodland needs the hand of a skilled forester to direct the removing of some of the weed trees, preserving the few old growth trees, and planting of a variety of seedling species.

There is a dearth of conifers such as cedars, red and yellow pine, hemlock and balsam. Needed also is a wide variety of deciduous species such as oak, Canadian red maple, beech, yellow, white and silver birch, and linden; also shrubs that provide winter berries for birds. The swampy areas need to be drained into a constructed wetland area.

If this work is to be started this year it must be done quickly before the sap starts to flow. Trees cut when full of sap are useless for lumber or firewood. This work should be followed in the spring by planting tree seedlings, drainage, and trail building. Nature trails leading to points of interest need to be developed for educational purposes and enjoyment by Mississauga citizens.

The Cawthra Woods can be a community asset or a wasted monument.
