1. CALL TO ORDER
(b) Rogers 2001 Cable Rates
(g) Cawthra Estate Donald Barber, President, Friends of the Cawthra Bush, and Chair, The Cawthra Ratepayers' and Residents Association, along with a couple of supporters, appeared before Council regarding the following recommendation: "That the project by Community Services to partially demolish
the walled garden at the Cawthra Estate, 15407 Cawthra Road for safety
reasons, be endorsed and that staff be requested to salvage any remaining
bricks for other heritage projects in the City. Mr. Barber
objected to the proposal on the basis that it was not presented to the
public and it will destroy wildlife habitat. Mr. Barber requested that
the project not be approved and that it be referred to all interested parties
for input.
Al Bollock, not a member of the organization but interested in the Cawthra Bush, suggested that the public be made aware of the benefits of the Bush and kept informed of the acitivities taking place. Councillor Corbasson advised that there was no requirement for this to be taken to the public and the wall is imminent danger of collapsing. Councillor Corbasson pointed out that this is no different than taking down a tree which poses a danger to human life. Staff have assured the Heritage Advisory Committee and Council that the wall is a hazard and represents a potential liability to the City. Mr. Ramsey, a resident of the City for many years, expressed his interest in the precedent being set by this action and the preservation of the Cawthra Bush. (GC-0832-2000/December 6, 2000)
