A Protest Rally
Jan. 23, 2000
  Jan. 23/2000, a protest rally was held at the entrance to the Cawthra Community Centre, during its grand opening.   The following is the letter I sent to the Missing News.  It should be noted that both the mayor and the Ward 1 Councillor drove past our protest, never stopping to talk to us.

Dear Editor;    Feb. 9, 2000 -  Not going away;

        Jan. 23/00, a protest rally was held at the entrance to the Cawthra Community Centre, during its grand opening.  More then 20 members of the Cawthra Ratepayers' and Residents' Association (CRRA) and the Friends of the Cawthra Bush, supporters came out in the winter, for two hours, to express how unsatisfied they are with how the City has treated taxpayers' and the Cawthra Bush.  Carrying signs and handing out flyers.  We were warmly welcomed both in the Community Centre and outside as most who drove by honked their horns in support, some even stopped to find out
more and offer to help.

        We are very unsatisfied with how the City of Mississauga and the Ward 1 Councillor handled residents concerns regarding the Cawthra Bush.  Councillor Carmen Corbasson would not meet with the CRRA, would not represent our concerns and would not help the CRRA become recognized by the City.  The City would not let taxpayers' vote on the Cawthra Management plan.  Hopefully they will realize we are not just going to go away.

         Our presence at the opening of the Cawthra Community Centre ensured that both the message would be heard by most in the community and that our Mayor and local Councillor would be on hand to speak with us after the ceremonies, which was complete with cake.  Oddly neither did,
why is this, don't they care?  Carmen Corbasson and Hazel McCallion showed that they were of the same mind, and responded with the all too typical response by our politicians, they paid us no mind.  There was no call after, either.  If nothing else they should be commended for their team
work and their stick-to-it-ness that has so successfully defeated taxpayers efforts to have a meaningful say in their community.  But let us not forget the City is generous, it will provide and let us eat cake.
