Kitty couple will get the boot

By JENNIFER BAIN - Toronto Sun

A Mississauga couple who turned their city-owned home into a shelter for stray cats will soon be homeless themselves.

Mississauga council yesterday passed a motion to give Brian and Lois Stevens 120 days notice to vacate the Burnhamthorpe Rd. property.

The motion also states the house will be demolished once it's empty.  The city has promised to help the couple find a new home.

The couple had been renting the 3,000-square-foot house from the city for $860 month since 1981. They'd been using it for a cat shelter for the past five years.

The shelter cares for stray cats and places them in good homes, for free.

Brian Stevens called the decision "disgusting."

The city cited bylaw, zoning and lease infractions in its decision to turn the couple out.

Mayor Hazel McCallion said she's only following the rules.

"I may be known as a compassionate lady, but I'm also known as an iron lady," she said.

Ward 6 Councillor David Culham said he saw no need to tear the building down and that the animal shelter isn't bothering anyone.

Dr. Keneth Easton, vice-president of the South Peel Ontario Humane Society, said cats will suffer if the Stevens are turfed out.
