Better bylaws are needed, too…

Animal shelter problems top Humane Society list

By DEBBIE WATTIER - Special to The Mississauga News

Animal rights groups must show some teeth and help devise municipal bylaws to better protect animals said a local councillor at the Humane Society's annual meeting Wednesday.

Ward 6 councillor Dave Culham told society members at Port Credit Library that many local and national animal issues need immediate attention, putting the growing number of unwanted animals near the top of a long list.

"I should have a working paper on city shelters and sterilization next year," he said.  "There's also a lot of wildlife in the City worth protecting but I need your input to crunch a policy through."

From his floor seat, Culham told of his efforts over the years to protect 18 deer roaming the Credit River Valley between Dundas St. and Eglington Ave., the same way many horticultural groups are anxious to protect the bog and forest flowers in the area.

Also interested in the welfare of family pets, Culham earned applause by suggesting alternative pet housing be found.

A Society member is currently in hot water for nurturing and providing adoption services for cats in a city home.  Bylaws do not permit animal shelters in residential dwellings.

The society puts animals down each week due to the lack of space at their present shelters. Soaring land costs are making new shelters prohibitive and have forced society members to look for alternative ways to house animals.

Other challenges facing the society this year include banning pet stores and exotic animals in Mississauga, finding land for a cheap shelter, and fundraising.
