Letter from

The Premier of Ontario
Legislative Building  Queen's Park
Toronto, Ontario  M7A 1A1

 August 1, 1989

 Dear Mrs. Pinizzotto:

Thank you for your letter of June 18, 1989, regarding the recent decision by the City of Mississauga to demolish the property at 1469 Burnhamthorpe Road West.

I am advised that the City of Mississauga owns this property and that the demolition of the existing structure was a land use planning decision made by the municipal council to allow for new development.  I have also been informed that the animal shelter which the tenants developed on the site was initiated without the required permits and was in violation of the local zoning by-law.

The issues which this matter raise are most appropriately resolved at the local government level.  The Rental Housing Protection Act which restricts the demolition of rental property in the Province's larger municipalities does not apply in this situation because the rental property at issue contains less than five rental units.

I understand the concerns you raise in your letter respecting the need for animal shelters.  However, I am advised that there was a full and open debate

respecting this matter at a recent Mississauga City Council meeting.  I would suggest that your continuing concerns be directed to these individuals who are responsible for making the decision.

Again, thank you for writing to me on this matter.

 Sincerely,  David Peterson

cc: Honourable Chaviva Hosek - Minister of Housing
