Case of the cat lady is still unresolved

By Mike Funston - TORONTO STAR

Mississauga's cat lady, Lois Stevens, still doesn't know where she stands after a deal fell through with the city to temporarily allow her to stay on the property where she runs a cat shelter.

The city has been trying for a year to evict her from the Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. house, a municipal property that eventually will be demolished.

A compromise was worked out by lawyers for the two parties that was to have allowed Stevens to stay in the 75-year-old former Bird estate until June 1, 1991.  She has rented the place for seven years.

However, the deal was rejected by city council.

"They reneged on the deal… everything is still up in the air," Stevens says.
But she adds that a court action to evict her has been dropped by the city.
Council just wants a guarantee that if Stevens is allowed to stay, she must close the shelter, and remove a border who has been staying at the house, city solicitor Bruce Thom says.

Complicating matters is that Stevens' lawyer was recently appointed a judge, so she has had to get a new lawyer.

For years, Stevens has kept a non-profit shelter for abused and abandoned cats on the property and has earned accolades from area veterinarians for her work.

A city bylaw forbids residents from keeping more than four pets per household.
