A sad day

By Betty Hurson - Mississauga

Dear Sir:

The curtain is slowly coming down on one of the finest cat sanctuaries in this country; a sanctuary which adopted a no-kill policy, which was always clean, where no cat was kept in a small cage, where all received the best medical care which included neutering and spaying, where abused, neglected, feral cats and pets which could no longer be kept by caring owners, found a haven.  All this was paid for by Lois and Brian Stevens.
Loving and responsible owners were then found, again at the expense of the Stevenses.

All animal groups, organizations, as well as private individuals, veterinarians, journalists, and the Toronto Humane Society supported the Stevenses, many pleaded personally with an implacable council and mayor to give special status to Lois Stevens as it had with some others with more than four animals.  All was to no avail.  The exception in council was David Culham who always presented well researched and intelligent arguments on behalf of this compassionate couple.  Council was not swayed, and the Stevenses themselves were made to feel like common criminals instead of caring citizens who were attempting to help not only the cats but also the city by taking in animals and not allowing them to breed disease and cause annoyance to people.

Mississauga could have become a leader in animal welfare instead it chose to penalize Mr. and Mrs. Stevens for breaking the by-law, something which many other people have done in a variety of ways without incurring the wrath of the city.

It will be a sad day for all of us who supported the Stevenses when the shelter is finally closed.
