New attempts to rally support

Bird house fight not over

Lois Stevens is hoping the Toronto Humane Society will go to bat for the cat shelter she runs in the City-owned home that city council recently ordered demolished.

Stevens was to meet yesterday afternoon with Liz White of the Toronto Humane Society in an attempt to rally support to reverse the councils 8-2 decision last week to give Stevens and her husband, Brian, 120 days to vacate the Bird house before it is demolished.

The Stevenses have run a humane shelter for cats, at their own expense, on the property on the east bank of the Credit River north of Burnhamthorpe Rd, W. since 1983.  Stevens says she was stunned when council made it's decision after a lengthy hearing a week ago, because she expected to be able to stay in the house for two or three more years until her husband retired.   She says that since the council decision, she is being urged by animal lovers across the city to fight to change the decision that will mean closure of the only "no-kill" shelter in the city.

The Stevenses take in the abandoned or feral cats and give them medical attention, have them spayed or neutered, and ensure they are adopted to responsible pet owners.  None of the cats are destroyed.

Stevens says that winding up the operation will be very difficult because many of the cats are not readily adoptable.   Some have been abused and are suffering from the equivalent of a nervous breakdown in humans, says Stevens.

The operator of the Burnhamthorpe Cat Shelter is still bitter about council's decision.   She says politicians were short-sighted in not voting to spent $8,000 to fix up the home and allow the couple to remain on the Bird property for another few years.

The City eventually plans to incorporate the Bird lands into the development of a 100-acre public gardens and conservatory along the banks of the Credit.
