Opening comments - more at end. A good example of how many people feel after dealing with the cute little old lady the is the Mayor of Mississauga. 12 November 1989 - Letter BURNHAMTHORPE CAT SHELTER
Dear Betty: Thank you so very much for your stalwart support over the past months in my dispute with the Mississauga City Council. I am especially appreciative of your emphatic support of myself and the cat shelter during your verbal presentations delivered before the Mayor and Councillors at City Hall. Both you and your husband have helped me keep my spirits up and given me the strength to continue fighting. It is, indeed, most unfortunate, to say the least, that your efforts did not succeed in persuading the Mayor and her [ 3 ]Council to reverse their previous decision to evict Brian and I from 1469 Burnhamthorpe Road West, and, thereby, gracefully acquiesce to the existence of the cat shelter. The Mayor's final comment that I was only pleading for the cats so-that I may continue to live here, was particularly vitriolic, [ 1 ] and was a supreme example of distortive political play to solicit public support for her arrogant adamance, [ 2 ] since the public did not know that I could have moved to my own house if it had not been for the cats. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] The democratic methods of the Mississauga Council meetings, of which the Mayor smugly alluded to, are, in reality, no more then a verbal homage to the principles of democracy. They listen, or at least they appear to do so, very politely to all the comments of the speakers, and then either ignore what was said or pull it apart in the secure knowledge that they will not have to defend what they say as there is no further discussion allowed. What a mockery of justice it would be if our Courts were to follow the same techniques. I intend, as you well know, to continue to fight on to stay here, for the sake of the cat shelter of course, but this time it will be in the Courts, wherein I hope to find more sympathetic ears. I shall keep the shelter operating in the meanwhile. Thank you yet again for all your valued personal support. Yours sincere - Lois D. Stevens. PLEEASSE SIGN OUR PETITION It will make a difference! Hazel and her Council are certainly impressing the public with how they do business. [ 3 ] - By this time Mrs. Stevens knew all to well how City Hall works. [ 4 ] - This house would soon be rented and Lois would not be able to move into it when she lost her home on Burnhamthorpe. But it does show how little the Mayor cares to know the facts, after all the decision has been made. [ 5 ] - This next part shows Lois has learned the hard way how the BIG LIE works, in Mississauga. ] |
