Page - - Mississauga News, Dec. 2/94 - Letter Rebuttal Re: Guest Column by Jocelyn Webber of Nov. 16,1994 Ms. Webber has made the City Parks people out to be a bunch of idiots. I have watched this Cawthra Woodlot drama unfold from the beginning and I can safely say that, the City's foresters have a good grasp of the situation and their approach to the management of the woodlot is not anything like what Ms. Webber describes. I get the feeling she would like the city to turn its back and ignore their responsibility to make sure our parks are safe and pleasing to the eye. I understand that the woodlot has been thinned to encourage the growth of new tree seedlings and at the same time, to create more animal and bird habitat. I can see these things happening, why can't she? I have seen first hand how animals such as a family of foxes have used the brush left over from the thinning as a shelter for their den. I have also seen many birds using the trees that are left standing for their nests. Ms. Webber talks about how this woodlot is invaluable for ecological research. I think there are probably very, very few people who want to see this park turned into the exclusive playground for researchers. Has she even thought about what the average citizen wants in their woodlots? The way Ms. Webber- describes this woodlot you would think it was located in Clayoquat Sound or Temagami or the Amazon Basin. It seems that Ms. Webber has been in hibernation for the last few months. She didn't mention anything about the City forming an advisory committee made up of people with backgrounds like her own. The City, from where I stand, seems to be doing all it can to meet Ms. Webber's demands. I can't understand how she can call what the City and the CVCA did in. the woodlot, logging. If you want to see logging go to B.C. or northern Ontario. John Birch
